Two one-act plays from two of England's greatest living playwrights, Howard Barker and Steven Berkoff. Performed by the Lancaster University Theatre Group (LUTG).
On the eve of a battle in which Assyrian general Holofernes aims to sack Jerusalem and massacre her people, Judith, a widow from the city, sneaks into the general's camp with a plan to poison his wine. The very survival of her people depends on her success. But Holofernes is not what she expected - for one thing he does not drink. Judith: A Parting From the Body, is Howard Barker's provocative and witty portrayal of the night Israel's greatest heroine took on her greatest adversary. In a highly charged act the two engage in a private and deadly war over sex, power and love.
In The Penal Colony, recounts the experience of a traveller visiting a colonial outpost on observing an elaborate torture device that carves the sentences of condemned prisoners on their skin. Based on the gruesome story of the same name by Franz Kafka, Berkoff's play explores the lengths to which proponents of this system of execution are prepared to go in its defence.
